Chiefly letters from South Carolina coastal areas of Port Royal, North Edisto, Stono Inlet, and Charleston Harbor, to John E. Parsons, New York, discussing the blockade and naval duties. Letter, 26 Oct. 1862, re political views of fellow officers, who "call themselves 'Democrats' " with one a southern sympathizer, and descriptions of Port Royal and Charleston Harbor; 13 Mar. 1863, re a skirmish with a Confederate ship and dividing prize money; 10 May 1863, re Confederate ironclads in Charleston Harbor; and 17 Mar. 1864, re blockading and the necessity for "cold, dogged persistence" as secret to winning a war. Also including detailed diagram of Confederate submarine vessel, 17 Mar. 1864, illustrating "Rebel Infernal or Torpedo Machine" with explanation of its operation and illustration of submarine in water with 4 sailors cranking the propeller a captain rides in open hatch above the water line; and letter, 21 Nov. 1896, from John Parsons, re returning letters received during the war. Other correspondents include Mary Parsons.
